Please take our five minute Broadband Survey to help us better understand current availability of broadband in our region and to gauge demand for additional services.

The Albemarle Commission is one of the sixteen regional councils of government for North Carolina and represents 10 of NC’s northeastern-most counties including Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington. This survey was built to verify availability of current broadband services in our counties, to identify actual speeds available through our speed test, and collect information on demand for services from residents and businesses across our counties. Demand assessment and aggregation is critical for enticing broadband providers to invest in additional services for an area.

To participate in this survey please start by entering your address in the form located on this page. Please use the address where you currently subscribe or wish to subscribe to broadband services. We are asking for input from both Residential and Business locations.

Initial data collected in this survey will provide valuable information to the Albemarle Commission and its state and local partners working towards broadband and economic development planning for the region. The Albemarle Commission and its partners will use all data collected for assessment and analysis on the state of broadband in the Albemarle region. Anonymized data will be shared with current and potential Internet providers and relevant parties with the aim of improving internet services for our rural areas.

If you have questions about this survey or effort, please contact us at broadband@accog.org. Thank you for your help!

Counties in Survey

Note on Gates County: Gates County has just recently participated in a Crowdfiber campaign through Roanoke Electric Cooperative. That campaign has captured over 750 responses from Gates. If you are a Gates County resident or business, you are welcome to still participate in this Albemarle survey. But if you participated under the Roanoke campaign, don’t worry – your response will still be recognized as part of the Albemarle effort!

Albemarle Commission - Anthony Agreste

Mediacom's internet is terrible. You pay for high internet speeds and nothing changes. Spotty internet, constantly up and down. Many of my neighbors have the same issue. Centurylink is just as bad. We need access to more providers to drive competition.

Neighbors to the left and right if me have mediacom cable Internet. Due to the location of the tap and the distance down the road and into my yard 450 feet they will not extend service to my home. Century link offers 7mps only. Those is better than some but not as good as what the norm seems to be just 1 mile north. I know there are contacts involved and expensive infrastructure that is owned by current companies but competition or regulation must be allowed to force improvements.

Albemarle Commission - Theresa Evans

I used to have Mediacom cable after repeated outages I went to satellite. Internet service we don't have another provider to switch to, believe me I looked into it, posted on Perquimans yard sale, there is no resolution. After eighteen months of repeated outages, the last two happened back to back for over a week each time. I filed a complaint with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Mediacom cable bent over backwards to fix the issue. At first it looked they resolved the issue, FCC complaint was closed. It had rained, we lost service again, it was a temporary outage, thankfully. When I called to report the outage I was told it was going to be six weeks before a service tech could come out. Suspecting the rain was the issue we put a plastic bag over the service "TAP". It worked, next major rain storm, no outage! The service tech came earlier than the six weeks, he did find the service "TAP" was getting wet and put the plastic bag over it. I am not kidding! That was in December '16 and Mediacom has yet to put on a new cover. I have all of the complaints I filed with the FCC & Mediacom. If you would like the copies let me know.
